In the summer of 2014, Bryard was presented with an extraordinary opportunity: to compose the theme song for a new children’s book series by New England author Gloria Respress-Churchwell. He teamed up with his old friend from high school, Alexandria Churchwell, a theatre major at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in Manhattan, to bring this project to life.
The collaboration resulted in a complete seven version theme song entitled “Savannah & Me”, a short little jingle that was to introduce the fictional character of Savannah Green to the world. A few months later, Bryard and Alexandria went back into the studio and collaborated to create a full five-song EP to compliment the debut book in the series, Robert Churchwell: Writing News, Making History (A Savannah Green Story). The album was released on February 1. The music was composed and produced by Bryard Huggins. The lyrics were written and performed by Alexandria Churchwell.
It was announced in the fall of 2015 that Respress-Churchwell would be starting on her second book in the series: Dr. Chester Pierce: Playing South of the Line. The book will focus on the inspiring life of Dr. Chester Pierce, the first African American to play football south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Dr. Pierce is also a noted psychiatrist and has been a long time member of the board of directors for the National Association of Psychiatrists. He also was involved in the conception of the popular kids TV show, Sesame Street. Bryard and Alexandria went into the studio to record their six track accompanying album to the book in January 2016, set to release along with the book later this spring.
"There are no mistakes, only opportunities."
"There's nothing wrong with a different point of view."
"We laugh, we cry, we reach for the sky...and we'll always stick together."
Savannah Green, a 3rd grade African American girl, is the star of the series. After the sudden death of her father in a car accident, she and her mother decide to leave their familiar home of Chicago and move to Nashville, Tennessee to be closer to their family. The move was too much for Savannah to handle, as the unfamiliar city of Nashville scared her and her transfer to another elementary school, Robert Churchwell Elementary to be exact, forced her to leave all her friends behind. Through the ups and downs of being in a new place, Savannah begins to discover incredible men and women who overcame adversities of their own and how it inspired them to dream big, work hard, and be the best you can be. Savannah takes these people’s stories to heart and realizes that adversities can be turned into opportunity, the moral of the series as a whole.
About the Savannah Green Series
Author Gloria Respress-Churchwell
The purpose of composing an album like this is to teach kids the main messages of the book through music. Alexandria and I agreed that kids learn in many ways and sometimes interaction is the best. They respond to sound. Rhythm. Instrumentation. Melody. Words. Along with each of Respress-Churchwell's books, an accomanying album will sing the story in the perspective of the main character Savannah.
